Mascular Degeneration
Dr. Marc R. Rose is a diplomate of the American Board of Opthamology and a fellow of the American Academy of Opthamology. He is in private practice specializing in eye health and anti-aging medicine in Los Angeles, California.
Macular degeneration occurs when poor circulation causes hardening of the arteries in the back of the eye. Symptoms are: blurred
vision, distortion of vision, and loss of central vision leading to an inability to drive, read or even watch t-v.
Most at risk for macular degeneration are people over 65 and post-menopausal women.
The main causes of aging are:
- Abnormal glucose metabolism. Sugar lurks in all prepared foods. Also avoid too much bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. Some people do well on a vegetarian/carbohydrate diet, others on a higher protein diet. Each person has a bioindividuality. Some people actually convert protein to glucose. To find out which is best for you, go by your symptoms. If you have high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and are overweight, you are on the wrong diet and are producing too much insulin. Hyperinsulemia causes many diseases As a result of hyperinsulemia, the protein in our body "crusts." Collagen diseases are the body's response to this. Chromium and vanadium can help modify the body's insulin release. When you are eating correctly, you will usually be lean, trim and have lots of energy.
- Oxidation ( "Rusting") When the body uses glucose plus oxygen it produces waste products called oxidants. The supplements of Vitamin A, C, E, Selenium, and Co-enzyme Q10 are powerful anti-oxidants.
- Inflammation. To counteract the inflammatory process, it is important to supplement with essential fatty acids (EFA's) These included Omega 3 (fish oil & cod-liver oil) and Omega 6 (evening primrose oil and borage oil)
- Methylation. (the product of a carbon plus 3 hydrogens) Homocysteine is a product of normal metabolism. It is formed when
your body metabolizes or processes methionine (an amino acid that is part of protein foods.) Homocysteine is toxic and normally a healthy
body breaks it down before it can build up.
To keep homocysteine levels low, you need Vitamin B6, Folate and B12. TMG is also good (trimethyl glycine) It ids important to keep the DNA strong inside the nucleus and mitochondria. The cell nucleus has DNA. The mitochondria has its own DNA which we get from our mother. This has the energy we need and must be taken care of because it does not have a repair system like nuclear DNA. EFAs help maintain good cell membrane so good nutrition can enter the cells. Eating transfatty acids is like "putting saran wrap around the cell"
PROTECTING AGAINST MACULAR DEGENERATION
As we age, the effects of: eating the wrong foods, prescription and non-prescription drugs, alcohol, toxins, pollutants and cigarette smoking build up. The eye tissue is the first to decline. This is because the retina with its rods and cones use much of the fuel in the body. It is important to:
- Maintain a good diet. Modify insulin release from what you eat.
- Take anti-oxidants
- Take anti-inflammatory supplements ( Omega 3-6-9)
- Keep homocysteine levels low.
- Balance your hormones 6. Protect your eyes against UVA and UVB rays
