VITAMIN A

NUTRIENT INFORMATION

  • The carotene form is more commonly used and has shown no toxicity at high doses.
  • Some of the beta carotene found in the form of fruits and vegetables is converted into vitamin A by your body. Carotene is, therefore, called pro-vitamin A.
  • The animal source of vitamin A is called Retinol.
  • Vitamin A is measured in USP (United States Pharmacopoeia) and IU (International Units). It may also be measured in RE (Retinol Equivalents).
    Vitamin A is stored in the body.

Note: Nutrients that are stored in the body are beneficial because the body can draw on its reserves when needed. However, you must be cautious not to consume consistently high amounts, which could create a toxic condition. In other words, take only recommended doses.

  • Supports the immune system and protects the body from colds, flu and infections
  • Known to be a factor in cancer prevention
  • Helps reduce risk of heart disease
  • Aids in treatment of emphysema, upper respiratory and lung disease

  • Helpful in reproductive processes and healthy sperm
  • Aids in preventing night blindness and strengthening weak eyesight
  • Helpful in the treatment of other eye disorders such as macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa
  • Promotes healthy hair and skin
  • Effective in the treatment of acne and the elimination of superficial wrinkles when applied topically

BEST NATURAL SOURCES

  • Liver, fish oil, carrots, dark green vegetables, yellow vegetables, yellow fruit (apricots, cantaloupe), eggs

HOW TO SUPPLEMENT

  • Recommended dose: 5,000–10,000 IU daily
  • Not to exceed 20,000 IU daily

EXCESS/LACK

  • Excess can cause liver enlargement.
  • Deficiency causes night blindness.

TOXICITY ISSUES

  • 20,000 IU daily for a long period is toxic to adults.
  • 18,500 IU daily is toxic to infants.
  • 20,000 IU daily can cause yellowing of skin.

DOCTOR’S COMMENTS

  • Eat carrots! Carrots are extremely rich in beta carotene. Two large carrots will give you approximately 10,000 IU of vitamin A.
  • Vitamin A should not be taken with the acne drug Accutane.
  • Pregnant women should not take vitamin A, but can take beta carotene without adverse effects.
