I want to answer your questions about some drugs that are prescribed for Osteoporosis. I get many e-mails on this subject.
THERE ARE 3 DRUGS THAT YOU HAVE BEEN ASKING ME ABOUT:
WHAT EXACTLY ARE THESE DRUGS DOING?
In lay terms, they disrupt the mechanisms within bone that allows for old, weak bone to be broken down and carried away. This is called bone resorption. Estrogen inhibits bone loss by inhibiting bone resorption.
It has NO role in new bone formation.
Testosterone and progesterone are the two hormones that promote new bone formation.
These (FOSAMAX, EVISTA, ACTONEL) synthetic estrogens are allowing your skeleton to retain more old bone, but are doing NOTHING to help you form strong new bone!!!!
For the first 3 years of use of FOSAMAX, EVISTA, ACTONEL you will usually show a modest increase in BMD (bone mineral density). HOWEVER, after 4 years or more, the incidence of hip fractures usually RISES since the old bone can no longer resist the stress placed on the hip joint.
IMPORTANT: Estrogen supplements slow bone loss, but only progesterone restores lost bone.
A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine which followed almost 10,000 women for 8 years, found no actual benefit in giving estrogen to women over age 65 for bone loss.
Conventional medical doctors assumed that since estrogen levels decline at menopause and osteoporosis risk increases around that time, then it must be an estrogen deficiency disease and HRT would be the answer.
Studies on using estrogen and other pharmaceutical drugs like the ones listed above to treat osteoporosis have shown that the benefits are only temporary and after about 5 years, the women began to have an increase in fractures; probably because the old bone becomes so fragile at that time.
We know that progesterone helps to actively increase bone mass.
Thanks to Dr. John Lee, we have studies available that show that women who used natural progesterone showed up to 29% increased bone mineral density in 3 years or less of progesterone therapy.
The best news is that the women who had the worst degree of bone loss had the greatest improvement, so it is never too late to start!
IMPORTANT NOTE: IF YOU ARE ON ANY OF THESE DRUGS, BE SURE TO WATCH FOR SIGNS OF SERIOUS PROBLEMS LIKE BLOOD CLOTS.
- Shortness of breath
- Pain & swelling in the calf
- Tenderness in the calf
- Esophageal pain
