David Wood, M.D."Cataracts"An abnormal, progressive clouding and loss of transparency in the lens of the eyes. A whitish-gray opacity may be seen within the eye. They are caused most commonly by degenerative changes in the eye, occurring most often after age 50. Puncture wounds and trauma may also cause the development of cataracts. Cataracts begin gradually and progress as painless blurring of vision. Total vision loss is eminent without medical interference. NUTRIENTS & SUPPLEMENTS:Vitamin C & Bioflavinoids: Known to be aldose reductase inhibitors which reduce accumulation of sorbitol in the retina. Bioflavinoids also support the body's natural ability to maintain capillary integrity and peripheral circulation.. Suggestion: 1500 mg. of each daily. Beta-Carotene: Converts to vitamin A in the body which is know to be essential for pro[proper vision. A very active free radical quencher. Contra-indicated for patients with hypothyroidism because they are unable to convert beta carotene into Vitamin A. Lutein: Macular pigment contains lutein. Enters the eye from the plasma and accumulates in the retina where it filters out blue light which can cause photo damage of the retina. Zinc: The most abundant mineral in the human body and often the elderly are at risk of macular degeneration because of the depletion of this mineral.
