"Prostate Cancer & PC Spes"

PSA = Prostate Specific Antigen. If greater than 4, it usually means the prostate is enlarged, inflammed or there is cancer. If you follow the PSA, it will show how active the cancer is.

The usual treatment for cancer is radiation, chemotherapy and drugs.

Prostate cancer may never become aggressive, but doctors usually like to remove the prostate anyway.

TURP is a treatment that opens the passageway so men can urinate.

A prostate resection is removal of the prostate. This can destroy the nerves that control erecton. 90% of men become impotent. If over the age of 70, almost 100% of men become impotent.

PC SPES is a new prostate therapy that is being explored today.

PC SPES: named for prostate cancer (PC) and the Latin word for hope (SPES) is a blend of 8 Chinese herbs including Panax ginseng and saw palmetto. It has been found to help the majority of people (80-90%). It appears to suppress the growth of cancer cells.
When taking PC SPES, you measure the PSA monthly. You can adjust the dose from 9-12 pills per day. Maintenance dose is usually less than 4 pills daily. The monthly cost of of PC SPES ranges from about $200-$400 depending on the dosage and is not covered by insurance to date. There are from 2-3 thousand men in the US now taking it.
Side effects: Possible breast enlargement, decreased libido. In a small percentage of men it may cause thrombophlebitis (clot formation)
