Charles C. Manger, M.D. is the Founder and Director of the Saddleback Eye Center in Laguna Hills, CA. He is certified by the American Board of Eye Surgeons in both refractive and cataract surgery.

LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis) surpassed PRK (photo refractive keratectomy) this year as the No. 1 vision-correcting refractive surgery in the U.S.

With LASIK, laser surgery is performed on the surface. The surgeon cuts a flap on the surface of the cornea with an instrument, folds the flap aside, uses the laser on the tissue inside the cornea, then replaces the flap and leaves it to dry for a few minutes. The flap naturally bonds to the cornea so that no stitches are required.

The laser is actually run by a computer.The prescription of the patient is entered into the computer and the computer dictates the surgery.

patients can often see well in minutes

The eye may feel slightly scratchy for 24 hours after the procedure. The patient is given lubricating drops and also antibiotic drops which are used for 5 days.

Clear eye shields are worn over the eyes to prevent rubbing the eyes. Patients may return to normal activity the next day.
